Solar Energy Harvseting in Vanasuma Hostel

In the month of September 2018 Vanavasi Kalyana Karnataka (VVK) CSR team got an opportunity to work on a project sponsored by a company “Turner & Townsend Pvt. Ltd.” located in Bangalore. Objective was to harvest solar energy to fulfil all the needs of one hostel in Karnataka. Team chose a hostel named “Vanasuma” in Adkar village, Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. This hostel was dedicated to the society on 25th May 2015 and presently 24 students from tribal community are accommodated in this hostel.

VVK team connected with experts from this field who studied energy needs of the hostel and came up with a proposal to install 3 KW solar panels in this hostel. CSR team then finalized an agreement with sponsor and coordinated with a vendor “Apollo Power Systems” to get this equipment installed in the hostel. Onsite installation was completed on 28th Dec 2018 and this equipment is now catering to all the energy needs of this hostel.

This project will help in maintaining uninterrupted power supply in the hostel which will immensely help students in their study. In addition it will bring down the running expense of the hostel. Last but not the least this effort will help in bringing down the carbon foot print of this hostel.

As per telephonic conversation with Sri. Atul Jog, National Organizing Secretary Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram (VKA), this is the first hostel in Karnataka and second among ~225 hostels run by VKA in Bharat, to be fully powered by Solar energy. Vanavasi Kalyana expresses gratitude and is thankful to the management of Turner & Townsend Pvt. Ltd for sponsoring this project.
